Philosophy

Sončno polje is a story, written in wood

The special feature of Sončno polje is that it is built entirely of wood. Its mighty thatched roof gives it a unique appearance while fostering a special connection with nature and the rural tradition of Prekmurje. Although it relies on traditional building materials, the building is designed in a modern way: it is not a copy of a small, wooden house, but a planned architectural whole with separate residential, catering and conference areas.

Architecture with the soul of Prekmurje

Hotel Sončno polje was designed by architects with Prekmurje roots, Goran and Maja Dominko. In the foreground, its architecture speaks to the local region and people, while in the background, a rural building stretches out with a mighty thatched roof, which seamlessly connects with its surroundings and nature.

This is how a space was created where tradition and modernity meet in dialogue, and where guests can feel the peace, cosiness and beauty of the Prekmurje countryside.

Hotel Sončno Polje

A tribute to the architectural heritage of Tešanovci

The third section of the building, which pays tribute to the historical architecture of Tešanovci, has a symbolic value. An imposing building once stood on this location, on an important trade route to Hungary, so the architects respectfully incorporated its elements into the new image of the hotel.

The brick roof and preserved ornaments on the street side are a tribute to the architectural heritage of the settlement that bridges the past and present.

Natural materials

When designing Sončno polje, architects Goran and Maja Dominko focused on nature and the Prekmurje landscape. They considered how to translate them into a modern, yet authentic architectural expression. Sončno polje proves that it is possible to transform traditional materials into modern architecture that respects the environment, addresses heritage, and creates a cosy space for a peaceful stay.

Building the thatched roof

Thatched roofs are one of the oldest forms of construction, known for thousands of years across Europe. In Hungary and Prekmurje, they were still a common roofing material for rural houses in the 20th century.

Building the thatched roof

A thatched roof is created by patiently stacking bundles of rye straw into several layers. Craftsmen secure them with wooden pegs or metal clamps, and create characteristic patterns on the ridge. This type of roofing is durable, natural, and provides excellent insulation, retaining the cold in summer and warmth in winter.

The work is performed by specially trained craftsmen, as it requires precision, strength and patience. Each roof is unique, as it is adapted to the architectural design of the house.

Spacious outdoor lodges

A special feature of Sončne polje are the spacious outdoor lodges, which blur the line between indoor and outdoor space. They allow guests to be connected to nature throughout their stay, with a view of the vast Pannonian fields and the first hills of Goričko.

These are not mere balconies. They are the settings of slow mornings and quiet evenings. Here, every moment turns into scenic tranquility and the beauty of living.
